God's Eye View vs Alternatives: Live Map Dashboards Compared
How God's Eye View stacks up against Flightradar24, ADS-B Exchange, other open-source globes and Google Earth — and which one fits your needs.
God's Eye View kicked off a wave of live world-map dashboards — a whole index of them now exists on GitHub. Here's how Sidhu's project compares to the alternatives, and which one fits what need.
God's Eye View (this one)
The cinematic pick. CesiumJS photorealistic 3D globe, cockpit ride-alongs, FLIR/NVG sensor modes, voice agent, keyless start. ~20k stars, MIT, runs locally. Best for: the full "movie command center" experience and anyone who wants to self-host. Weakness: no historical playback — it's live-only by design.
ADS-B Exchange / adsb.lol (flight tracking)
If you only care about aircraft, the dedicated flight trackers go deeper: unfiltered data, historical playback, detailed aircraft metadata. God's Eye View uses these as sources. Best for: aviation nerds who want depth over spectacle. Weakness: flights only, flat 2D maps.
Flightradar24 / MarineTraffic (commercial)
The polished commercial options with mobile apps, alerts, and years of history. But they're closed-source, subscription-gated for the good stuff, and single-domain (air or sea). Best for: casual tracking on your phone. Weakness: not open, not unified, not free.
Other open-source globe dashboards
The gods-eye-index on GitHub catalogs the whole family — World Monitor-style dashboards sharing the same feeds (OpenSky, CelesTrak, USGS). Most are 2D or less polished; a few specialize (earthquake-only globes, satellite-only trackers). Best for: specific obsessions or lighter hardware. Weakness: none match God's Eye View's presentation or layer count.
Google Earth
Gorgeous, but a static atlas with a time slider — not a live operations picture. No live flights, no radio, no voice agent. Best for: exploring places. Weakness: nothing moves in real time.
Which should you pick?
Want the unified live planet with cinema-grade visuals, free and self-hosted? God's Eye View. Want deep single-domain data with history? The dedicated trackers. Want it on your phone with zero setup? The commercial apps. Most people end up with God's Eye View on the desktop for the wow factor and a phone app for alerts — they complement each other. Our install guide gets you running in five minutes if you pick the globe.
